Siena, Day 13 Italy
We explored a bit outside of Siena, returned the car, took a taxi back, and
explored Siena further on foot. We enjoyed a nice hike to San Domenico Church
and the Sanctuary of St. Catherine, the patron saint of Siena.. In the 1300’s,
St. Catherine helped convince Pope Gregory XI to return from France to Rome,
and the church has been a pilgrimage site since the 1400’s, as we witnessed
with the many visitors.
We walked and walked and walked, drinking in the architecture, the shops,
the sounds of the language, the people.
We had dinner down the street from our room at Ghiberti’s, a small family
run place. For dessert I had a torta della casa—-sort of an almond paste
torte, mmmm, and Bill had pannecotta, the Tuscan fruitcake that would make
any doubter become a fruitcake fan. He also had Riciarollas, chewy Tuscan macaroons…..and
then he had tiramisu and ricotta gelato!
