Prague was our introduction to Eastern Europe. The city has a magic quality that is reminiscent of our childhood fairytale books. Spires and towers, winding lanes, intricate street lamps. It was here we began to grow in our understanding and to develop a deep compassion for a region that has been oppressed by one group or another over the centuries.
Our apartment was well-located in a residential neighborhood on the edge of the Old Town, allowing us to walk everywhere. Shopping for our own groceries was like going to a fascinating food museum. We have never, ever seen so many types of sausages, all in baskets on shelf after shelf. The same can be said for the rolls and breads. Beef, pork, potatoes, dumplings, and breads are the staple restaurant fare.
We enjoyed a walking tour of the Old Town (Old Town Square, Jewish Quarter, Charles Bridge), New Town (Wenceslas Square), Castle Quarter, and Little Quarter. We also took a fascinating architectural walking tour. We spent our free time ambling and exploring all these areas further on our own, taking in many interesting sites and experiences.
